Why I’m Going In on Open Source

I’ve decided that most of my projects from now on will be open source.

This isn’t a decision. I’ve been thinking about it for a while now.

How I Got Here

When I first started coding I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t have a computer science degree or a mentor. I just used YouTube tutorials, Google searches and AI tools.

I use AI a lot to learn. When I get stuck I ask for help. AI has been like having a tutor 24/7.

Many open source developers I’ve never met taught me how to think like a programmer. I owe a lot to the open source community.

The Honest Part

I want to be honest about something. Not all my projects will be open source. Some projects I keep to myself because they could be misused.

That’s just being responsible. I think most developers understand this.

For everything else it’s going public.

What This Means

From on here’s what I’m committing to:

  • Every project gets a repository. If it’s safe to share I share it.
  • Documentation matters. I write READMEs that actually explain things.
  • Contributions are welcome. I want feedback.
  • Imperfection is fine. Some projects will be rough.

What’s Next?

Honestly I have no idea. I don’t have a plan. I’m a self-taught programmer who learned to code with free tutorials and AI assistance.

Some projects will be tools. Some will be experiments. Some will be things I build at 3am.

If one person finds something I build useful that’s a win.

Thanks

Thanks for reading this. If you’ve ever built something and shared it publicly thank you too. You probably taught me something without knowing it.

Check out my GitHub to see what I’m working on. Always open to feedback or code reviews — happy to learn from anyone. If you want to reach out, feel free to contact me at lyedev@zohomail.com.

Stars on repositories are appreciated. Contributions are welcome. Thanks for dropping in!

Let’s build something together.
